Clouded in Clerkenwell

Darkly comic historical fiction ‍ ‍

First in a planned series

Set in 1641 London, Clouded in Clerkenwell follows two face painters who conceal their master's accidental death to seize his studio and chase royal patronage — only to find themselves entangled with a blackmailing anatomist, a formidable widow, and the outbreak of civil war.

In the freezing winter before England tears itself apart, apprentice Henry Kentridge and his brilliantly reckless Dutch head assistant Antonis Van Laken make a catastrophic decision: when their tyrannical employer dies in a studio accident, they conceal the body — giving it to a disgraced anatomist next door in exchange for his silence. What follows is a dark caper about ambition, deception, and the cost of chasing a world that will never truly value you.
